dealing with the unpredictable

I am often reflecting on our weeks and how quickly they seem to pass. Wishing for more of a schedule and tradition built into the everyday, I decided that this week would be a great time to start. Over the weekend, I went to Sam's stocking up on food so that there would be several meal options for us and no quick trips to the store for diapers. Monday morning came. Mark took the car leaving me without the option of getting out with the kids. The boys and I got started early with some projects around the house, and they enjoyed a long morning of playing together in their room. We had noticed that Abel developed a cough on Sunday night but thought that it was a small cold that he had picked up. As I went about my productive morning, I noticed that his breathing had become irregular and seemed forced. He also had a fever and started to complain of not feeling well. The breathing problems really scared me. By the time we arrived at the pediatrician's office that afternoon, the glands under his neck were swollen, his complexion had changed, and he seemed exhausted. The doctor quickly concluded that he needed a breathing treatment and later diagnosed him with mycoplasma pneumonia. Once the treatment was nearly over, it became obvious that he was feeling much better. I started hearing Darth Vader's breathing sounds coming from beneath his little oxygen mask. He's 3 1/2 and might have seen Star Wars once! What a silly kid. It was a relief to see bits of his personality instead of just a sick little boy. So, we have made it through a couple of scary days, and he seems to be getting better. I guess I will have to work on those simple days at home starting next week...
