lately

Some crazy days with funny stuff along the way:

I usually have a recent picture that corresponds with whatever I am writing about. Well, not this time. I suppose I am just not that eager to remember these weeks of dealing with a baby with chronic ear infections who never sleeps very long, and two other boys who have some kind of amazing radar that detects when their mom has dealt with much, much more than she can handle...which indicates to them that this is the best time to press her patience and get away with more than usual...Not to be pessimistic--just real.

Last Monday night I decided to try making my friend, Amy's, tasty enchiladas. I guess I was taking too long for Abel. He kept coming into the kitchen asking when dinner would be ready with his head resting on the edge of the bowl of shredded chesse. Frustrated, I explained again that it would be a few more minutes and that he should go find his dad. After repeating this process several times, he stood on the barstool next to the area where I was working and said, "You're drivin' my nuts, Mom. YOU'RE DRIVIN' MY NUTS! GRRRR!" Of course, he must have heard the saying "driving ME nuts" somewhere...surely not from his parents. Anyway, the enchiladas turned out great and were enjoyed by all. Thanks Amy!

Last week, after a quite difficult day, my husband offered to take us out for pizza and a much needed beer. I was thankful and got the kids ready and out the door as fast as possible. We arrived back at home right in time for bed. As we were getting out of the van, I heard Aidan singing impromptu, "You know Jesus. You know best. I love Jesus. He's the best." Abel then decides to stand in the street and play chicken with on oncoming car (which was far off). I, then, directed him toward the sidewalk. He runs, trips, and gets upset with me. Ollie begins throwing a tantrum because we will not leave him alone to run around inside of the van. Aidan walks into the house eyes closed and hands folded over his face in prayer for his wayward brothers. Once inside, Ollie grabs an oversized clown hat, pulls it over his face, and walks around hands in front of him and giggling as he bumps into walls. Aidan avoids running into his brother while continuing to pray for his family. Meanwhile, Mark and I are in the kitchen watching this interesting conclusion of a crazy day and just laughing.

On to Thanksgiving...We headed up to Nashville Thursday morning to spend time with Mark's family. Good food, good family time, and a small celebration of Aidan's 5th birthday (Nov. 28th). Then, we threw the kids in the car, met up with my mom, and drove four hours to my brother's house in Greensburg, Indiana. The kids were great in the car. I think that Ollie actually got some much needed rest while riding upright in his car-seat. Mom worked hard to make the holiday enjoyable for everyone bringing a Christmas tree and decorations as well as food for an on-the-go Thanksgiving feast. My dad also made the trek up to IN making this the first holiday that we have spent together since they separated over seven years ago. Nice. Cousins enjoyed each other's company, some much needed rest was had by all, I tried to remember how to relax, and Mark actually read some of the book that he brought. All seemed to be going well until the final day of our trip. We stopped by a good ole' Golden Corral hoping to fill our tummies before shopping and heading home. I sat at the table full of my family, eating a variety from the buffet, listening to my brother discussing the nutritional values of the food before him and the Green Day song playing over the restaurant speakers. Interesting. The onset of illness hit during our short, chaotic shopping excursion. The next couple of hours were spent driving fast attempting to get as far as possible before someone else would get sick; stopping to clean up the mess and change kid's clothing; and just trying to hold it together long enough to get us home. We ended up stopping in the middle of nowhere, got a hotel room, stayed up all night cleaning and juggling sick kids, and praying that I would have enough energy to drive us home the next day. Well, we did make it home and are all fine now.

Oliver is getting tubes put in his ears tomorrow, and the rest of the week will be spent preparing for Aidan's super hero birthday party. Whew!
