lately

Some crazy days with funny stuff along the way:

I usually have a recent picture that corresponds with whatever I am writing about. Well, not this time. I suppose I am just not that eager to remember these weeks of dealing with a baby with chronic ear infections who never sleeps very long, and two other boys who have some kind of amazing radar that detects when their mom has dealt with much, much more than she can handle...which indicates to them that this is the best time to press her patience and get away with more than usual...Not to be pessimistic--just real.

Last Monday night I decided to try making my friend, Amy's, tasty enchiladas. I guess I was taking too long for Abel. He kept coming into the kitchen asking when dinner would be ready with his head resting on the edge of the bowl of shredded chesse. Frustrated, I explained again that it would be a few more minutes and that he should go find his dad. After repeating this process several times, he stood on the barstool next to the area where I was working and said, "You're drivin' my nuts, Mom. YOU'RE DRIVIN' MY NUTS! GRRRR!" Of course, he must have heard the saying "driving ME nuts" somewhere...surely not from his parents. Anyway, the enchiladas turned out great and were enjoyed by all. Thanks Amy!

Last week, after a quite difficult day, my husband offered to take us out for pizza and a much needed beer. I was thankful and got the kids ready and out the door as fast as possible. We arrived back at home right in time for bed. As we were getting out of the van, I heard Aidan singing impromptu, "You know Jesus. You know best. I love Jesus. He's the best." Abel then decides to stand in the street and play chicken with on oncoming car (which was far off). I, then, directed him toward the sidewalk. He runs, trips, and gets upset with me. Ollie begins throwing a tantrum because we will not leave him alone to run around inside of the van. Aidan walks into the house eyes closed and hands folded over his face in prayer for his wayward brothers. Once inside, Ollie grabs an oversized clown hat, pulls it over his face, and walks around hands in front of him and giggling as he bumps into walls. Aidan avoids running into his brother while continuing to pray for his family. Meanwhile, Mark and I are in the kitchen watching this interesting conclusion of a crazy day and just laughing.

first gift

jewel box.jpg

After returning from his Pre K class yesterday, Aidan walked up carefully holding a little box that he decorated. He explained that this box was very special and should contain only objects that he loves. He spent the next hour walking around the house and yard attempting to fill his box with beautiful objects. Among the things that he collected were a blue butterfly wing, a small purple flower, an even smaller white bloom, and some deep green berries taken from the monkey grass. It was soon time for a nap. Feeling exhausted, I decided to lay down with Aidan hoping that everyone would need to rest as much as I did. Aidan soon began to "fix" my hair. When finished, he opened the little jewel box, picked out the purple flower, and carefully placed it in my hair. He then handed the box to me with the sweetest look on his face and said that I should have it. I suppose it is just striking how a child can so purely love and give without feels of obligation...
