tidbits

We invited a little friend over to share last Saturday morning with Aidan and Abel. I adore this little girl with her original style, compassionate heart, and truth-filled comments. While I ran around the house arranging the boys clothes for a short trip to the grandparents, I caught tidbits of the kids' conversations and thought that they were worth remembering:

At one point the boys were trying to play dress up with their little friend. I think that she was looking for a girly costume, but finding something of that sort in this house is quite a hopeless endeavor. I saw Aidan running up the steps yelling, "I'm a batman/superman with pokies sticking out. What are you...batgirl?" He had three different masks on his face--bits of superman and spiderman were plainly visible with the points of the batman mask barely showing above the others. His friend decided that she would much rather be princess laya, and she, of course, would never use a sword or light saber. Aidan looked a bit confused....

A while later I heard them looking over the wrapped gifts under the tree. Aidan has such a desire to give gifts to all of his family and friends. Without the funds to support this wonderful idea, I have encouraged him to sit at the dining room table each afternoon filling it with different papers, ribbon, glue, crayons, and markers...oh, and tape. I cannot ever forget the tape. He then sits for the next hour or two constructing these well intentioned gifts for absolutely everyone he can think of. My favorites by far are those finished off with Mark's secret stash of stickers that Aidan happened upon a week ago. Anyway, Aidan was showing off his creations to his friend. I caught the end of one conversation:
A--this is black.
M--black? well, black is a really bad color.
A--a bad color? why?
M--well, it's the color of satan. haven't you heard of satan.
A--satan? umm. no.
At that the subject is dropped and they are on to something else. I guess the topic just really surprised me. It still makes me laugh....

During the final week of Mother's Day Out, Aidan came home from school carrying another special creation. He approaches me proudly carrying a small painted box, raffia for straw, a wooden clothespin with two eyes and a small smile, and a small piece of white felt wrapping the clothespin. "Mom, this is baby Jesus," Aidan says. "He was born and died on a cross for our sins." Aidan then lays the box on the table in front of me, looks straight into my eyes, and says, "Think about it." Now, whenever Abel is being disobedient, Aidan will retrieve baby Jesus from his portable bed and remind his brother of the sacrifice made to rid us of the "ugly stuff" in our hearts.

Aidan recently started redressing himself. Here we have a nice combination of red and green accented with some blue and black (oh no!) star wars gloves and a spidey mask.

Mark happened upon a sweet moment with Abel and Oliver. Ollie is always wanting us to read and reread this book. Abel must have decided to give it a try.
