the kids

**********
during mother's day out, one of the other parents came to share one of her child's stories from the previous week. i guess the pre-k teachers had been talking to the kids about what they might like to be when they grow up. david, aidan's friend, said that aidan quickly decided that he needed to be a super-hero. david, the more practical child, thought that becoming a builder would be a better option. later that night he told his mom that he definitely would like to be a builder but had decided to fight crime with aidan during his time off....

quiet
the boys just left for a long weekend with their nana...it is 6:30pm, and I am casually looking through different blogs that i enjoy in a quiet house. can you believe that! 6:30! it is amazing how coveted those moments of silence are in a house full of children. of course, i do miss them already...but, ahhh, silence.

birthday boys

birthdays, birthdays...abel and oliver were born two years and one day apart, which makes for quite the festive birthday weekend once that time of year rolls around. i remember coming home from the hospital when they were born thinking that spring has to be the perfect time to have a baby. the jacket goes unused throughout the winter as that little internal heater keeps mom quite comfortable. trees come into bloom and birds can be heard right as the new one makes his debut....
this weekend was busy but fun. we celebrated with a small party for abel using some of ezra jack keat's stories as a theme (this author shares abel's birthday). we read a few stories, blew whistles, drew with sidewalk chalk, played with bubbles, and enjoyed the beautiful afternoon on our front porch. nice. it was a joy to see abel thrilled to be surrounded by good friends all there just for him. presents, a dirt cake with gummy worms (thanks lisa!), and kid snack food galore also helped to make his day special.

aidan wrote out his birthday greetings on his chalkboard. i especially like the added "woot!" and the hieroglyphics at the bottom.

bug jar

Monday, the boys spent a large part of the afternoon digging through the dirt and overturning rocks in an unkept planter in our front yard. It is evident that they are truly boys as they pry slugs from the rocks, inspect each one, and carefully place them into a jar. While relaying the days events to a friend and showing off his fine collection, Abel proudly said that he and Aidan are "bug hunters."

I have tried to make a habit of reviewing the first few questions of the children's catechism and some of the commandments with Aidan and Abel during dinner each night. Eager to share all that he has learned, Aidan first said, "Mom, I know all of the commercials...oh yeah, I mean commandments" (surely this is a bad sign). Then he began, "Obey your mom and dad...Do not (stutter, stutter) want somebody else's toys...Do not call the Lord names." Abel then chimes in, "Yeah, don't call the 'Wlord' bad names." Then we were on to, "Do not steal...Don't smush a toy that someone else has." At that point things really started getting silly. I asked if Aidan could remember any more, and he quickly responded, "Yeah, DO NOT talk with your mouth full!" Wit at 5 years old...I was impressed. I guess that is what I get for asking for any sort of review during dinner.

...and on to the new bath-time past-time...bubble beards!
