mud baby

more time spent in the mud...this is the face that oliver makes whenever asked to smile for a picture. he must have seen one of his brothers acting silly in front of a camera and thought that this was expected. he is really growing up. despite his increased vocabulary, most of his efforts to communicate are spent relaying the same two lines on an incomplete knock-knock joke that he picked up from a friend. i love the sound of his nasal "knock-knock."

spring!
egg hunts, evening walks, sprinkler fun, reading time....

the last picture on the right was taken just yesterday. it was really raining, and aidan decided to spend the afternoon playing in the rain, jumping in puddles, and sending little handmade rafts (or bunches of sticks along with a few rocks) down with the water running along the curb. before going outside, he headed to his room to grab a sweater and a toddler hat. what a great combination for a warm, rainy day! the other boys joined in as they woke up from their naps. oliver was especially delighted to get completely dirty and wet. it was nice to see people stopping to watch the boys as they completed their evening commute home. it seems that these brief glimpses of a child freely playing somehow instantly reconnect us to that piece of childhood that is easily forgotten. soon the rain stopped, our little stream quickly dried up, and the boys worked on making "worm soup" out of the muddy water left behind. with his completed concoction in hand, aidan made a strong argument for warming his creation on the stove "just to see what happens." i had been working on weeding out a planter while watching the boys, so my arms were soon covered with dirt and my pants reflected their true use--a towel for those muddy hands and wet faces...definitely a good way to spend an afternoon....
